Pearl Jam
West Palm Beach, FL 6/11/08

“Understand the weather, Summer’s on its way” Kicking off the 2008 Summer Tour with the Atlantic breeze off in the distance, Pearl Jam returned to South Florida with an “Oceans” opener, complete with a false start to remind you that even with their two hour soundcheck the day before, spontaneity and a certain degree of looseness will always be a main ingredient in the live Pearl Jam experience. A spirited “Given To Fly” was highlighted by lightning bolts dancing in the sky, and with “Faithful,” “Sad,” and “Dissident” following, the feeling that just about anything could happen on this tour was not only in the air, but in our ears with the re-emergence of “Who You Are” from No Code, which had not been played live since 1998. Eddie Vedder was playing an electric sitar/guitar for this one, enhancing the Indian/World Music groove so integral to the song. A riveting run through “Grievance,” “Glorified G” and “Why Go” brought the main set to a close on this rather hot and sticky night to the delight of the sweaty masses that packed the Cruzan Amphitheatre to full capacity. Mike McCready’s “Inside Job” started the encore set in overdrive, as did “Comatose” and the jammed out “Rearviewmirror.” Returning for the 2nd encore solo, Eddie Vedder reflected on the Seattle-like weather the band was greeted with in Florida, prompting a brief take on Tom Waits’ “Rains On Me.” Crowd faves “Alive” and “Yellow Ledbetter” capped off a simply fine start to a tour that has an anything goes vibe.
