Pearl Jam
Virginia Beach, VA 6/17/08

Hot off the heels of two previously blazing shows, you’d have to expect Pearl Jam to come down to earth eventually—and while this Tuesday night in Virginia Beach features some of the band’s finer mid-tempo tunes (“Long Road,” “Low Light,” Sleight Of Hand”), there’s also plenty of rockin’ to be had with “All Night,” “Faithfull,” and a tour breakout of Matt Cameron’s tune from Binaural, “Evacuation.”

Seeming to revel in the outdoor atmosphere, the crowd turns both “I Am Mine” and “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town” into full-on sing-alongs. “Green Disease,” “Not For You” and “Comatose” light a good fire with their driving rhythms and frenetic energy, and “Jeremy” closes out the first encore.

Eddie Vedder opens the second encore with a solo version of “Guaranteed” from his Into The Wild soundtrack album, and this was not only the first time for one of those songs to appear at a Pearl Jam concert, but was a delight to hear as well. As this was the last show that the Kings Of Leon would be opening on this tour, they joined the band for a rousing finale on a cover of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World.”
